- Ñ HOW TO USE MACCONTEST 4.»
-
- ╨ Before starting the program be sure to set the internal clock to UTC using the
- Controlpanel.
-
- ╨ The files "MacContest.CTY", "MacContest.HLP", "MacContest.SETUP", "MacinTalk"
- and the PrinterDriver must reside in the systemfolder or in the same folder as
- the program / logs.
-
- ╨ After launching the program you must choose "NEW", "OPEN" or "IMPORT" from
- the "FILE" menu before you can go on. If you have choosen "NEW" you must name
- the document as in other programs, then choose the Contesttype if it is in
- the list included (otherwise push the "CANCEL" Button) and then fill out the
- dialogs.
-
- Push the "CANCEL" Button if you are starting for a VHF-Contest as there are no
- Contesttypes included in the list for these kinds of contest's.
-
- The settings will be saved to disk as a separate file and named like the
- logfile followed by " SetUp". Both files must reside in the same folder.
-
-
- ╨ NOTE: Not all Contesttypes included in the list have been tested on the air.
- It is up to you to check how they work and if the results are correct
- before you are going to use it in a contest.
- Pushing the "CANCEL" button when starting a new contest lets you use
- the whole program just without scoring.
-
- ╨ Set the band and mode using one of the buttons or use the "BAND"- and "MODE"-
- menus.
-
- ╨ Note that there is always only one enter-field in the main-window.
- In this field you can enter all items necessary for the contestlog (Callsign,
- Rcvd-report etc.). The program detects by itself which item you have entered.
-
- ╨ There will be a "?" in the enter-field as long as data is missing for a
- full Qso-record.
-
- ╨ Entering something that can't be a callsign or locator etc. won't be
- accepted and you are prompted with the note "Invalid input !".
-
- ╨ You can correct the input as many times as you want, just enter the new
- report or whatever has to be changed.
-
- ╨ Enter the callsign or received report or if needed the received locator.
- Then push the "ENTER"- or "RETURN-KEY" and the data will be set automatically
- to the appropriate item. The program shows you the country and CQ-/ITU-Zone
- after entering a callsign if this prefix is found in the "MacContest.CTY"
- list, otherwise it will tell you "Unknown Country".
-
- Worked callsigns from unknown countries are saved in a textfile named like
- the logfile followed by ".CTY". You may later include this prefix in the
- "MacContest.CTY" list with any text-editor before printing your Log.
-
- A "Ñ" in front of an entered callsign or received report indicates a new
- multiplier when finally the station is logged.
-
- ╨ If you enter a callsign from a station worked before, you are prompted
- with a note in the enter-field "Sorry Qso before !" and data for this
- contact is cleared.
-
- If you have checked the "Show Previous Qso" from the "OPTIONS" menu, the
- previous record will be shown in the window to the bottom.
-
- ╨ Your sent RS or RST is preset to "59" or "599" followed by the serialnumber,
- Zone etc. according to the settings in the SetUp. You don't have to enter the
- sent-report into the enter-field. This will be done automatically by the
- program. You can change your own RST eg. from "59" to "57" by entering a
- single "7", or from "599" to "339" by entering "339".
-
- ╨ Instead of entering always the "59" or "599" for the received-report you can
- use "CMD-KEY A" and then add the serialnumber (or whatever has to follow).
- Automatic CQ- or ITU-Zone is added with some Contesttypes, the Zone is
- activated in case you have to overwrite them before hitting the "ENTER"- or
- "RETURN-KEY".
-
- - Note: Zones, Cantons etc. within the Rcvd-report MUST be separated
- with a "-" to be scored. Otherwise there will be no scoring of them.
- Do NOT include a "-" if it has not to be scored.
-
- ╨ Date and time will be updated every minute.
-
- ╨ When the items are filled out according to the settings in the "MacContest-
- SetUp" you are asked for the "Next one ?". Pushing now the "ENTER"-
- or "RETURN-KEY" will save the record definitely to disk and your new score is
- shown in the most right window.
-
- ╨ If you want to change something before saving the record to disk do it the way
- described above before pushing the "ENTER"- or "RETURN-KEY".
- If you want to clear the whole record because the contact could not be
- finished use "CMD-KEY BACKSPACE" to clear the window.
-
- ╨ You can use DA's while working with MacContest as in other programs, but
- only clicking the main-window will return you back to MacContest.
- Clicking one of the small windows, on the bottom, like the "Previous Qso"
- window will move them from the right side to the left side or vice-versa.
-
- Note: Reading a log with 3000 contacts or even more takes just a bit time,
- so if you will enter eg. a multi-multi operation with thousands
- of contacts you should use different files for each band.
-
- MacContest is NOT MultiFinder compatible, not now and not in the future,
- so there is no need to ask for.
- Using MacContest with System 7 is NOT recommended.
-
-
- Ñ FILE
-
- - New
- Creates a new Log-File.
-
- - Open
- Opens the selected Log-File.
- You may also open a log by double-clicking the log- or setup-icon within the
- finder.
-
- - Close DA
- Closes an open Desk Accessory.
-
- - BackUp...
- Let's you duplicate your Log-File, eg. to a separate disk, for safety reason.
- Having this Menu-point activated then each new entered qso will be added to
- the original file as well as to the backup file.
-
- - Export ASCII File
- The current open File will be duplicated and saved as a Textfile. All items
- within a record are separated by a "tab", records itself are separated
- by a "carriage-return". You may use this option to transfer the Contestlog
- into another program. For example in a database or spreadsheet and print then
- your own designed logsheets or labels etc.
-
- Note: The File is duplicated the way it is in the memory. This means, if you
- just finished printing eg. sorted by callsigns, the Textfile is also
- written to disk sorted by callsigns.
-
- - Import ASCII File
- This allows you to import a Log created with another program or re-import
- a previously exported Log. All items within a record must be separated
- by a "tab" and in the same order as they are when using the export command.
- Records have to be separated by a "carriage-return".
-
- Note: A simple error checking is done while importing and incorrect records
- are skipped.
- You can use "CMD-KEY ." to stop importing.
- Dupe checking is made while importing.
-
- - Print Options...
- Brings up the "PrintOptions" dialogbox and lets you select from different
- prints and sorts:
-
- - Print Log
- Selects either a logsheet with 25 records on one page all separated
- by a blanc line, or 50 records on one page without blanc lines between.
- - Print Summary
- Prints a blanc Summary-sheet.
- - Print Label
- Selects a printout with all valid records on labels. For stations in
- countries listed in the "Exclude Countries"-field no printout will occur.
-
- - Endless Labels
- Used with the Imagewriters I, II and LQ.
- Select "No Gaps between Pages" in the Page Setup... before printing.
-
- - 24 Labels on A4
- Used (hopefully) with all other Printers.
- You might have to reduce the size somewhat, eg. to 90% on a HP-Inkjet, and
- adjust the Margins as well as the Gap between the Labels that they fit
- nicely on the paper.
-
- - Sorted by Numbers 001 ... 9999
- Selects the records to be printed in the order entered during the contest.
- - Sorted by Bands 1.8 ... 1200
- Selects the records to be printed band by band as entered during the contest
- on the single bands, starting with a new page when there are all contacts
- printed from the same band.
- - Sorted by Callsign A ... Z
- Is obvious. This might be of interest in combination with the Print Label
- command as you have the cards nearly sorted by countries.
- - Sorted by Locator
- Is obvious too.
-
- - Exclude Countries
- This option is used only in combination with Print Label.
- Enter the main-prefixes, each separated with a semicolon, from the countries
- you don't want to have labels printed.
- eg. with "HB,K,VE" in the "Exclude Countries"-field will not print labels
- from Switzerland, USA and Canada.
- - Label Footer
- Also used only in combination with Print Label.
- You have two lines for free text which will be printed on the label.
- To include your own locator from a VHF-Contest use one of the lines to
- include it on the label as the locator is not included in the report.
-
- The items in Exclude Countries and Label Footer are saved in the SetUp-File.
-
- - Page Setup
- Used as in other programs.
-
- - Print
- Prints the current open file according to the settings in Print Options.
-
- - Printing a complete log creates a textfile with the subtotals of all single
- pages, countries, prefixes, zones, cantons etc. worked on each band.
- The textfile is named like the logfile followed by ".PTS".
- You can later make a printout of this file with any text-editor.
-
- - Preview Log
- Lets you check scoring of the log. (No WYSIWYG)
-
- - Transfer...
- Lets you transfer to another program without returning to the finder.
-
- - Quit
- Is also obvious.
- Left data in the buffer is saved to disk before returning to the Finder
- or launching the new program with the Transfer command.
-
-
- Ñ EDIT
-
- - Undo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Clear are for use with DA's.
-
- - Edit Log
- Lets you modify all items in a record except your own locator.
- Use the "Find"-, "Same"- and "GoTo" buttons as described in the "SEARCH" menu.
- After clicking in one of the editable items the program assumes that you
- made any changes and, if you have not used the "Save" button before moving
- to the next record, you are asked whether to save the changes or not.
- Every single modified record is saved to disk.
-
- Note: There is no Dupe checking made while modifying!
- If the data in the memory is not sorted by numbers,
- it will be reread first.
-
- - Edit OptionKeys
- Lets you modify all OptionKeys used in MacContest if they do not match with
- your keyboard. Changes are saved in the MacContest program.
- The column on the left uses lowercase letters, and the column on the rigth
- is used with the caps lock down. To change any of the settings hold down
- the "OPTION-KEY" and push the appropriate key.
-
- - Contesttype
- Let's you change the last choosen contesttype.
- The log will then be recalculated.
-
- - Note Pad
- Let's you save a QSL-Info, Operator changes etc. to a separate textfile.
-
- Ñ SEARCH
-
- - Find...
- Brings up a dialogbox and let's you enter a callsign to find in the
- currently open file. If a record with that callsign exists, it will be shown
- in the "Previous Qso" window. You may also enter only a part of a callsign.
- Use then the "Find Next" command to move through all records containing that
- part entered.
-
- - Find Next
- Searches for the next record with the same callsign or callsignfragment.
-
- - Record...
- Brings up a dialogbox and lets you enter one of your record-numbers.
- This record is then shown in the "Previous Qso" window.
- This Menu-item is only enabled if the active sort in the memory is by
- numbers.
-
- - Print Label
- Prints one Label with the data from the contact found and shown in the
- "Previous Qso" window.
- Used only with Endless Labels!
-
-
- Ñ OPTIONS
-
- - MacContest SetUp
- Brings up the "MacContest SetUp" dialogbox and let's you enter several
- informations used by the program.
- All information will be saved to disk in the SetUp-File.
-
- (If you put the included file named "MacContest.SetUp" into the SystemFolder
- or into the same folder as the program, you will not have to retype the same
- stuff again and again when starting a new contest. You may edit this file
- with any text-editor and adapt it to your personal needs.
- But be carefull when doing this.)
-
- The following entries might be entered or changed in this dialogbox:

- Do NOT enter anything here if your heading for a HF-Contest. This item
- automatically changes some settings in the program which are used for a
- VHF-Contest only.
-
- - LogHeader
- Enter the needed column-titles for the logsheet.
- (This is already done for a VHF-Contest or if a Contesttype was choosen at
- start-up.)
-
- - Add SerialNumber
- Check this item if you need a serialnumber with the report you send. If this
- item is not checked, the serialnumber will be displayed to the right side of
- the enter-field in the main-window for your information on the number of
- contacts made. In this case it will be neither saved to disk nor printed.
-
- - Multimode
- Check this item only if the contestrules allow you to work the same
- station in different modes on the same band.
-
- - PostContest Entry
- Check this item to enter the contacts after the contest.
- With this item on and back in the main-window you are prompted to enter
- a starting date and starting time. They will then be shown in the main-
- window.
-
- Enter your contacts like described before. If you have now a dupe in your
- log the received report will be exchanged with "*** Dup ***", and if you
- are in a VHF-Contest the distance is set to 0, then you are asked to

- Choose Pitch and Speed.
-
- Note: The 'MacInTalk' driver must reside in the log- or system-folder.
- (Does ev. not work with newer Systems!)
-
- Using Talkmode with digitized voice:
-
- To be able to use this feature you must use a systemversion which has the

- Switches the Kenwood Interface (connected to the PRINTERPORT) On/Off.
- The active Band and Mode settings from the Transceiver are copied into the
- program while switched on. The use of one of the "Band"- or "Mode" buttons
- changes automatically the settings of the Transceiver and selects VFO A.
- You may set your transceiver on VFO B to any frequency by entering "QRGMHzKHz"
- into the enter-field and hitting "ENTER-KEY" or "RETURN-KEY":
- eg. "QRG14050" selects VFO B with the frequency 14.050 MC's.
- The contents of VFO A will not be changed so you can switch back to your old
- frequency by selecting VFO A on the frontpanel of your transceiver.
- I am using a 3 wire interconnect between the Mac and the TS-440 without using
- the optional interface supplied by Kenwood, only having inserted the necessary
- IC's in the TS-440 as described in the Instruction manual by Kenwood.
- This is cheap and works fine untill today.

- is entered correctly in the SetUp, the Timezones, Grayline with the width of
- the Grayline and the times of a possible contact on the Grayline to the
- station entered into the callfield in the main-window. No display means that
- there is no match on the Grayline that day or time of the year or Long/Lat
- is missing in the 'MacContest.CTY' file for this specific country.
-
- The Grayline is updated every 4 Minutes.
-
- If you hold down the "SHIFT-KEY" while choosing this menu-point again then
- it shows you the distance and heading to the station entered into the
- callfield in the main-window instead of the Grayline information.
- This acts as a switch so you can select between the two kind of displays.
-
- Note: You must use a 'MacContest.CTY' file delivered with a 'MacContest'
- version not older than 3.9 to be able to use these features.
- Or you might add Long/Lat numbers yourself to your file as described
- in 'EDITING MACCONTEST.CTY'.
-
- - Distance & ODX

- All entry is directly sent to the modem.
-
- Set up your modem for CW- or RTTY-Mode and switch off Terminal-Mode by using
- again "OPTION-KEY T".
- This also enables you eg. to say hello to your friends during an Rtty contest,
- and then switch back to normal Contest-Mode.
-
- Note: While in Terminal-Mode switching from receive to transmit or vice-versa
- is done with the usual commands like "CTRL-C t" and "CTRL-C e" etc.
-
- If you hold down the "SHIFT-KEY" while choosing this menu-point again
- then you are in the "Terminal-BK" mode which means you do not have to
- send the "CTRL-C t" etc. commands as every single character is directly
- send to the transmitter.
- This acts as a switch so you can select between the two kind of modes.
-
- Use the following keys to send automatic output to your modem:
-
- "OPTION-KEY 1..6" outputs entered text from the textfield 1..6
- "OPTION-KEY 7..9" changes CW-speed to 20 wpm, 25 wpm or 30 wpm
-
- Using Output to Modem in CW mode:

- "20:58 UTC"
- "HB9XYZ DE HB9CEY BK".
-
- - Capture
- Switches Capture Mode On/Off and let's you capture data to disk.
- Each captured textline is numbered with the actually valid serialnumber,
- eg. "321 QSL via W1XYZ".
-
- You may also use "OPTION-KEY C".
-
- The textfile is named like the Log-File and ".CAP" is added,
- eg. "CQWW RTTY.CAP".
- You can later make a printout of this file with any text-editor.
-
- - Send Text-File...
- Let's you choose a text-file to send to the modem.

- If a Kenwood-Tranceiver is connected to the PRINTERPORT and "Kenwood-
- Interface" is switched ON, the Transceiver will be set to the frequency of
- that DX spot on VFO B. The contents of VFO A will remain unchanged, so you
- can switch back to your old frequency by selecting VFO A on the frontpanel
- of your transceiver.
-
- The same will be done by clicking on one of the max. 9 displayed lines in
- the terminal-window. That means you'll have the last 9 announcements
- memorized.
-
- "CMD-KEY S" will announce a DX to the Packet Cluster, taking the callsign
- from the call-field in the main-window. If this field is empty, the last
- saved call will be taken. The frequency is taken from the Transceiver if a
- Kenwood-Transceiver is connected to the PRINTERPORT and "Kenwood Interface"
- is switched ON.
- You will be prompted to confirm the frequency and call and you may add a
- comment before it is sent to the Packet-Cluster.

-
- - Note: MacContest uses 'Software flow control', flow control characters are
- CTRL-S and CTRL-Q.

-
- Contents and description of the different columns for editing,
- adding and deleting countries:
-
- #1 Country
- Max. length = 25 chars.
-
- Some countries are marked with a '+' sign to avoid a second list with
- WAE-countries.
-
- eg. United Nations OE: EU: 15: 28: 4U1v: 4U1V: WAE Country
- + United Nations OE: EU: 15: 28: OE: 4U1V: DXCC Country
- If the contest requires the DXCC-list then '4U1V' is scored as 'OE'
- otherwise '4U1V' is scored as '4U1v'.
-
- #2 Continent
- Max. length = 2 chars.
-
- 'EU', 'AF', 'AS', 'NA', 'SA', 'OC' are allowed.
-
- #3 CQ-Zone
- Max. length = 2 chars.
-
- eg. '15'
-
- Insert the zone most often worked or use '..' if more than one Zone is
- possible.
- CQ-zone is only used with contest-types requiring it in the rcvd-report.
-
- #4 ITU-Zone
- Max. length = 2 chars.
-
- eg. '28'
-
- Insert the zone most often worked or use '..' if more than one Zone is
- possible.
- ITU-zone is only used with contest-types requiring it in the rcvd-report.
-
- #5 Standard-Prefix
- Max. length = 4 chars.
-
- eg. '4U1u'
-
- This one will be used for scoring and printing the log.
-
- #6 Possible Prefixes
- Max. length = 60 chars {incl. all ',' as separators and ':' at the end}.
-
- eg. '4U1U,4U43'
-
- You can add or delete prefixes in this column, prefixes must be separated
- with a ',' as shown in this example.
-
- eg. '4U1ITU' is using the special Callsign '4U8ITU'
- Insert '4U8I' in the last column of that specific country
- and '4U8ITU' will be scored as '4U1i'.
- United Nations HB: EU: 14: 28: 4U1i: 4U1I,4U8I:
-
- If you need more than the max. length of 60 chars simply insert a new line.
-
- eg. Asiatic Russia: AS: 18: ..: UA9: RZ0A,RZ0B,RZ0H...
- Asiatic Russia: AS: 18: ..: UA9: EX0A,EX0B,EX0H...
- Asiatic Russia: AS: 19: ..: UA9: UA0C,UA0D,UA0F...
- Asiatic Russia: AS: 19: ..: UA9: UV0C,UV0D,UV0F...
-
- Standard-Prefixes like 'KG4' etc. which could count for different
- countries, in this case 'Guantanamo' or 'USA', must contain the full
- callsigns in the column with possible prefixes otherwise it will be scored
- as 'USA'.
-
- eg. Guantanamo Bay: NA: 08: 11: KG4: KG4AR,KG4DD,KG4DX:
-
- With 'VP2' it is sufficent to have the first letter after the number added.
-
- eg. Anguilla: NA: 08: 11: VP2E: VP2E:
- Montserrat: NA: 08: 11: VP2M: VP2M:
- B.V.I: NA: 08: 11: VP2V: VP2V:
-
- Possible Prefixes may not have the '/' sign included as MacContest
- filters out all '/' before it is searching the Countries-list.
-
- eg. after having entered the call 'HB9/W1ABC/M' or 'W1ABC/CT3' MacContest
- filters out 'HB9' or 'CT3' as the possible Prefix and then searches
- the list to find the standard prefix, cq-zone etc.
-
- Deleting a country is simply done by deleting the appropriate line
- in the list and adding a new country is nearly as simple as deleting one:
-
- eg: 'Fantasy Island' with the standard-prefix '5C' in cq-zone '39',
- itu-zone '53' will be a new one.
- All you have to do is to insert a new line in the list with
- all needed info:
-
- Cyprus: AS: 20: 39: 5B: 5B,P36,H27:
- Fantasy Island: AF: 39: 53: 5C: 5C:
- Tanzania: AF: 37: 53: 5H: 5H:
-
- Note: Each column must be finished with a ':' and may not contain more
- characters as noted above.
- Possible prefixes must be written with uppercase letters and separated
- with a ','.
- Each line must be finished with a 'carriage-return'.
-
- Editing the list with a DA while you are working with MacContest
- does not edit the list actually used. In this case you must restart
- MacContest so the changed list can be read into memory again.
-
- #7 Longitude East/Latitude North
- Max. length = 15 chars and ':' at the end.
-
- eg. Fiji Island: OC: 32: 56: 3D2: 3D2: 178.25/-18.08:
-
- Long/Lat is used for calculation of grayline-info or distance and heading.
-
-
- Ñ HACKER's SPECIAL or EDITING THE CONTEST VARIABLES
-
- You don't have to be a programmer to edit the scoring variables but you should
- be able to edit resources with REdit or ResEdit. Understanding the function of
- these resources in MacContest let's you edit old contesttypes and even include
- new ones in the future.
-
- Variables used for contesttitle, logheader and scoring are held in 'STR#' -
- resources 256, 257 and 258. They are all related to each other with their ID's.
-
- 'STR#' 256 holds the contestnames. string max. 54 chars
- eg. 'STR#' 256/9 holds the title of 'CQWW DX CONTEST'.
-
- 'STR#' 257 holds the scoring variables.
- eg. 'STR#' 257/9 holds the scoring var's for the 'CQWW DX CONTEST'.
- Description see further down.
-
- 'STR#' 258 holds the logheaders.
- eg. 'STR#' 258/9 holds the logheaders for the 'CQWW DX CONTEST'.
- Header #1 used for pts/qso string max. 11 chars
- Header #2 used for multiplier's (exception FieldDay) 25
- Column #1 used for pts/qso with own continent 4
- #2 used for pts/qso with other continent's 4
- #3 used for pts/country with own continent 4
- also used for pts/qso with /P stations in FieldDay
- #4 used for pts/country with other continent's 4
- #5 used for pts/addon
